International Infection Prevention Week 2015 at Care Shop
Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) affect more than four million people in Europe and costs the NHS an estimated £1 billion every year.
International Infection Prevention Week aims to raise awareness of these HCAIs and the effect infection control has on patient and resident safety. It is led by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and will take place across the globe, including in the USA, UK, Middle East and Australia, during October 18 - 24 2015.
International Infection Prevention Week could not fall at a better time with the approach of seasonal flu outbreaks, and the appearance of norovirus (also known as winter vomiting virus). Although norovirus is thankfully usually not too serious, there is no cure for this highly infectious virus so prevention is the only way to halt its spread. The NHS estimate that norovirus affects up to 1 million people in the UK alone each year, but proper infection prevention protocol could help to reduce that number.
What is Infection Prevention?
Infection prevention is a broad term which in addition to personal hygiene also encompasses attitudes towards the use of antibiotics, information sharing, and well-trained healthcare professionals. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) offers advice to help with infection prevention in a clinical setting, but this guidance can be adhered to by everyone involved in healthcare from professionals, through patients, and all the way to visitors.
One of the easiest and effective ways to help prevent the spread of infections is to use proper hand hygiene products frequently before you enter, while inside, and after leaving a healthcare environment. For more information on the importance of hand hygiene, you can visit the APIC website.
Infection Prevention in Care Homes
Here at Care Shop, we understand that the safety of staff, residents and visitors is of the utmost importance to healthcare environments. That's why we have created a set of useful infographic posters that you can download for free and put up in your care or nursing home to spread the message that everyone plays a role in infection prevention.
The posters were created with the help of the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) and feature essential infection prevention and control guidelines that care homes and its carers, residents and visitors need to remember.
